Key Studies
Tretinoin in the treatment of photodamaged skin (1992)

Long-term safety of tretinoin (2005)
British Journal of Dermatology
Continuous use of 0.025% tretinoin for up to 4 years is safe and maintains improvements in photoaging without tachyphylaxis.
Tretinoin vs retinol: clinical comparison (2009)
Dermatologic Surgery

- breastfeeding
- sensitive skin (start low)
- eczema
Cautions
Significant irritation period (retinization) lasting 4-12 weeks. Extreme sun sensitivity. Prescription required in most countries.
Tretinoin vs retinol?
Tretinoin is prescription-strength and 20x more potent. Retinol converts to tretinoin in the skin but is gentler and available OTC. Tretinoin works faster but causes more irritation.
How long is the tretinoin purge?
Purging typically lasts 4-8 weeks as cell turnover accelerates. Existing clogged pores surface faster. This is temporary and a sign the medication is working.
Can I use tretinoin with vitamin C?
Yes, but at different times. Vitamin C AM, tretinoin PM. The pH difference makes them less effective when layered directly.
Is tretinoin safe long-term?
Yes. Studies show 4+ years of continuous use is safe and benefits are maintained. Skin does not become resistant to tretinoin over time.
