Extensive evidence as first-line acne treatment. 2.5% shown to be as effective as 10% with less irritation. Combining with adapalene or antibiotics improves efficacy.
Key Studies
Efficacy of benzoyl peroxide concentrations (1986)
Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology
2.5% benzoyl peroxide is as effective as 5% and 10% for reducing acne, but with significantly less irritation and dryness.
Benzoyl peroxide and antibiotic resistance (2010)
British Journal of Dermatology
Benzoyl peroxide does not contribute to antibiotic resistance, unlike topical antibiotics. It kills P. acnes through oxidative damage rather than antibiotic mechanisms.
Short-contact benzoyl peroxide therapy (2001)
Cutis
Short-contact therapy (apply for 5-10 minutes then wash off) provides efficacy comparable to leave-on application with dramatically reduced irritation.
- benzoyl peroxide allergy
- very dry skin
- eczema
Cautions
Can cause dryness, peeling, and irritation. Bleaches fabrics (towels, pillowcases). May increase sun sensitivity. Start with lower concentrations.
Does higher percentage work better?
No. 2.5% is as effective as 10% for most acne. Higher concentrations only increase irritation, dryness, and bleaching of fabrics without added acne-fighting benefit.
Can benzoyl peroxide bleach clothes?
Yes. Benzoyl peroxide will bleach towels, pillowcases, and clothing on contact. Use white towels and pillowcases, or try short-contact therapy (wash off after 5-10 minutes).
Can I use benzoyl peroxide with retinol?
Use at different times. Benzoyl peroxide can deactivate retinol if applied simultaneously. BP in the morning, retinol at night works well.
Does benzoyl peroxide cause purging?
BP can cause a brief purge in the first 1-2 weeks as it brings existing clogged pores to the surface faster. This is temporary.
