Urea

HumectantNatural

Also known as: Carbamide, Hydroxyethyl Urea

Best for:AllDrySensitiveNormal

A natural component of the skin's NMF (Natural Moisturizing Factor). At different concentrations, it hydrates, exfoliates, or treats hyperkeratotic conditions.

Routine placement

Serum · AM & PM

Time to results

Immediate hydration boost; 2-4 weeks for sustained improvement

Benefits

Deep hydration (low %), gentle exfoliation (10-20%), treats dry/rough skin, improves penetration of other actives, barrier support.

How to Use

Low concentrations (2-10%) for hydration. 10-20% for mild exfoliation. 20-40% for keratosis and very rough skin (feet, elbows).

Technical Details
pH Range5.0-7.0
Typical Concentrations2%-40%
Research Summary

Well-established component of NMF. Studies show urea improves skin hydration, barrier function, and at higher concentrations treats keratosis pilaris and psoriasis.

What to Avoid With
  • open wounds (high concentrations)
  • inflamed skin (high concentrations)

Cautions

Higher concentrations (>10%) may sting on broken or inflamed skin. Very high concentrations are keratolytic, not just moisturizing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Urea do for skin?

Urea is used in skincare primarily as a humectant ingredient. Its effects depend on concentration and formulation. Check the benefits section above for specific details.

Is Urea safe for sensitive skin?

Urea is generally well-tolerated, but sensitivity varies by individual. Start with a patch test if you have reactive skin, and introduce gradually into your routine.

Can I use Urea every day?

For most skin types, daily use is appropriate at standard concentrations. If you experience any irritation, reduce frequency to every other day.

NiacinamideVitamin

A versatile form of Vitamin B3 that strengthens the skin barrier, reduces pore appearance, controls oil production, and addresses multiple skin concerns.

Lactic AcidExfoliant

A gentle alpha hydroxy acid derived from milk. Larger molecular size than glycolic acid means slower, more gentle penetration. Also has humectant properties.

PanthenolHumectant

The provitamin form of Vitamin B5 that deeply hydrates and helps repair the skin barrier. Converts to pantothenic acid in the skin.

Vitamin B5Vitamin

The acid form of panthenol (provitamin B5). Supports skin barrier function, wound healing, and hydration.

Sodium PCAHumectant

Sodium PCA (sodium pyrrolidone carboxylic acid, also known as sodium pidolate) is the sodium salt of pyroglutamic acid, a naturally occurring amino acid derivative that constitutes approximately 12% of the natural moisturizing factor (NMF) in human stratum corneum. NMF is the collection of water-soluble, hygroscopic molecules produced during the terminal differentiation of keratinocytes from the degradation of the protein filaggrin. As the single largest component of NMF, PCA plays a critical role in maintaining stratum corneum hydration, plasticity, and barrier function. Sodium PCA is a remarkably efficient humectant, capable of absorbing moisture from the atmosphere at humidity levels as low as 50%. Its hygroscopic capacity exceeds that of glycerin, propylene glycol, and sorbitol under equivalent conditions. In cosmetic formulations, sodium PCA helps replicate the natural hydration mechanisms of healthy skin, making it particularly valuable for dehydrated, dry, and mature skin types where NMF levels are typically diminished.
