Marula Oil

OilMoisturizingNatural

Also known as: Sclerocarya Birrea Seed Oil

Marula oil is a luxurious, fast-absorbing oil cold-pressed from the kernels of the fruit of the Sclerocarya birrea tree, indigenous to southern and eastern Africa. The oil has been used for centuries in traditional African skincare and is prized for its exceptional oxidative stability, which far surpasses many other popular plant oils. This stability is attributed to its unique fatty acid composition: approximately 70-78% oleic acid (omega-9), 4-7% linoleic acid, and 4-6% palmitic acid, combined with a remarkably high concentration of antioxidants including tocopherols (vitamin E), catechins, flavonoids, and procyanidins. Marula oil contains nearly 60% more vitamin E than argan oil, contributing to its superior resistance to rancidity and its potent free radical-scavenging properties. The oil is lightweight, non-greasy, and absorbs rapidly, making it an elegant and effective moisturizing ingredient.

Benefits

Provides intense, long-lasting hydration due to its high oleic acid content, which penetrates deeply into the stratum corneum. Superior antioxidant protection from its exceptional vitamin E, catechin, and flavonoid concentrations shields skin from environmental stressors and premature aging. Improves skin elasticity and smoothness by supporting the lipid matrix of the skin barrier. Suitable for sensitive and reactive skin due to its anti-inflammatory properties and gentle, non-irritating profile. Helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles through enhanced moisture retention and cellular protection. Its rapid absorption and silky texture make it an ideal ingredient for both facial and body formulations.

How to Use

Apply 4-6 drops of marula oil to clean, damp skin as a standalone moisturizer or as the final step in your skincare routine to lock in hydration. It layers beautifully under makeup without pilling. Mix 2-3 drops into foundation or tinted moisturizer for a dewy, luminous finish. For body use, apply generously to damp skin after showering, focusing on areas prone to dryness. Can be used as a hair oil to smooth frizz and add shine by applying a small amount to mid-lengths and ends. Its high stability makes it suitable for both morning and evening application.

Research Summary

Scientific analysis confirms that marula oil possesses one of the highest antioxidant capacities among cosmetic plant oils, with tocopherol concentrations averaging 7.5 mg per 100 g of oil. A 2013 study in the Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology demonstrated significant photoprotective effects of marula oil polyphenols against UVB-induced oxidative damage in skin cell cultures. The high oleic acid content has been validated to enhance skin penetration of both the oil itself and other active ingredients applied alongside it, making it an effective carrier and booster in formulations. Research published in the South African Journal of Botany confirmed the antibacterial activity of marula oil against common skin pathogens. Ethnobotanical studies document its longstanding use in preventing and treating dry, cracked skin in arid climates, supporting centuries of traditional knowledge.

What to Avoid With
  • Allergy to Anacardiaceae family (mango, cashew)

Cautions

Marula oil is generally very well tolerated with few reported adverse reactions. However, individuals with known allergies to tree nuts or members of the Anacardiaceae family (which includes mangoes and cashews) should perform a patch test before use, as Sclerocarya birrea is a member of this family. The high oleic acid content may not be ideal for acne-prone skin in some individuals, as oleic acid can be mildly comedogenic for certain skin types. In such cases, it is better suited as a body oil or blended with higher-linoleic acid oils for facial use.
