Ginkgo Biloba
BotanicalAntioxidantAnti-inflammatoryNaturalAlso known as: Ginkgo Biloba Extract, Ginkgo Leaf Extract
Ginkgo biloba is one of the oldest living tree species on Earth, and its leaf extract has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. The extract contains a complex mixture of bioactive compounds including flavonoid glycosides (primarily quercetin and kaempferol derivatives), terpene trilactones (ginkgolides A, B, C, and bilobalide), and proanthocyanidins. In skincare, ginkgo biloba extract is valued for its potent antioxidant capacity, its ability to improve microcirculation, and its anti-inflammatory effects mediated through inhibition of platelet-activating factor and modulation of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways. The standardized extract typically contains 24% flavone glycosides and 6% terpene lactones. Its ability to scavenge superoxide anions, hydroxyl radicals, and peroxyl radicals makes it a versatile protective agent against environmental and UV-induced oxidative stress.
Provides broad-spectrum antioxidant protection through multiple flavonoid and terpenoid compounds acting via different mechanisms. Improves cutaneous microcirculation, promoting better nutrient delivery and a healthier skin tone. Reduces inflammation by inhibiting platelet-activating factor and pro-inflammatory eicosanoid synthesis. Helps protect dermal collagen and elastin from oxidative degradation caused by UV exposure and pollution. May enhance the skin barrier by supporting lipid membrane integrity through its membrane-stabilizing properties. Exhibits mild anti-glycation activity, potentially slowing the formation of advanced glycation end products that contribute to skin stiffening and sallowness.
Apply ginkgo biloba-containing serums or creams to clean skin once or twice daily. It can be used in both morning and evening routines. Ginkgo biloba extract combines well with other antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and ferulic acid for enhanced free radical protection. Look for standardized extracts that specify the concentration of flavone glycosides and terpene lactones. Typical effective concentrations in cosmetic formulations range from 0.1% to 5%. Allow the product to absorb before layering additional treatments. Follow with sunscreen in the morning.
Research published in Skin Pharmacology and Physiology demonstrated that topical ginkgo biloba extract at 2% concentration significantly increased dermal blood flow and skin hydration in a randomized controlled trial. In vitro studies show that ginkgo flavonoids effectively scavenge reactive oxygen species and protect human keratinocytes from UVB-induced apoptosis through upregulation of the Nrf2/ARE antioxidant pathway. Studies on the anti-inflammatory effects of ginkgolides demonstrate inhibition of PAF-mediated inflammatory signaling, reducing erythema and edema in irritated skin models. Clinical research on combination formulations containing ginkgo biloba with other botanical antioxidants has shown improvements in skin elasticity and wrinkle depth over 8 to 12 weeks. A comparative study found that ginkgo biloba extract exhibited stronger superoxide scavenging activity than several other commonly used botanical antioxidants including green tea.

Cautions
Ginkgo biloba extract is generally well tolerated in topical applications. However, individuals with known allergies to plants in the Ginkgoaceae family should avoid use. The extract may contain traces of ginkgolic acids, which are potential allergens and irritants; look for formulations that specify reduced ginkgolic acid content. People taking blood-thinning medications should be aware of ginkgo biloba potential antiplatelet effects, though systemic absorption from topical application is minimal. Discontinue use if redness, itching, or contact dermatitis develops.
